What Is A Prayer Journal?

Traditions in religion and spirituality typically have more in common than people realize. For example, nearly every denomination or religious institution holds values and tenets that are highly important in communicating with a revered deity. One common way to show respect to a higher authority is through regular prayer rituals. Some parishioners choose to keep a prayer journal to document their sacred activities.

Keeping a Prayer Journal

The actual journal is purely a matter of personal preference. Some users want to have a formal, leather-bound book that they plan to keep under lock and key. Other individuals may choose a fun, colorful hardcover journal with a fancifully wide spiral binding. Still, others may be completely fine with some loose-leaf paper and an old-fashioned lead pencil. The choice of media is not as important as the practice of keeping a prayer journal.

Recording Important Prayer Requests

One effective use of a prayer journal is to keep track of prayer requests. Small group leaders, Bible teachers, and other religious personnel often receive multiple requests within a single day. Listing those requests from friends, family members, and congregations in the form of a prayer journal is an easy way to make sure nothing is missed. Personal prayers can also be captured in a prayer journal. Some people find it easier to write out these thoughts and feelings than speak them aloud. Prayer journals provide a safe and cathartic place to outline these heartfelt emotions and connect with the God who hears and answers prayer.

Reflecting on Answered Prayer

In addition to the closeness with God and the Holy Spirit, prayer journals provide another form of inspiration. They are a great way to record answered prayers! Many users will write the date next to prayer and then write the date that prayer was answered as well as some details on the outcome. This practice provides a great source of encouragement, especially during times of sorrow or conflict. Users can reflect on ways God answered past prayers as a reminder of His faithfulness—simply knowing and remembering that prayers actually get answered is a comforting thought. It also serves as a reminder that things do not always work out the way we think they should, but they do always work out for the best.
