The Christian Church has many facets and denominations within its borders. For example, the Pentecostal Church is a relatively recent but fast-growing addition to the church body. A Pentecostal Church usually holds three central beliefs:
- The gifts of the Holy Spirit
- The role of women in the Church
- The literal interpretation of the Bible
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Pentecostal churches usually believe in the expression of the Holy Spirit in modern times. For example, many Pentecostals believe that both glossolalia (speaking in an unknown language) and xenoglossy (speaking in a language unknown to the speaker) is given through the Holy Spirit's power. Pentecostals also believe that the Holy Spirit inspires worship as well as provides divine healing.
The Role of Women in the Church
The role of women in the Pentecostal Church varies, but they are generally seen as equal to their male counterparts. For example, the early leaders of the Pentecostal movement from the 1900s were either woman or taught them without discrimination against them. Some women are known to start or "plant" churches in an area as a matter of missionary work. On the other hand, Pentecostal women are expected to dress and present modestly, including a discouragement of women wearing makeup or tight-fitting clothing.
The Literal Interpretation of the Bible
Many Pentecostals believe that the Bible is to be taken literally. For example, many Pentecostals cite 1 Timothy 2:9 as a directive for women to dress and present appropriately and modestly. Pentecostals also suggest that women are to be actively included in the Christian faith, quoting verses that include men and women in various Christian activities. Pentecostals also suggest that xenoglossy is Biblical, citing Acts 2, which describes early Christians speaking in other or unknown languages.
Although they are a relatively younger part of the Church, many Pentecostals feel that they closely follow the teachings of the Bible. Pentecostals include:
- A literal interpretation of the Bible.
- A strong belief in the inclusion of women.
A belief in the power of the Holy Spirit.
