Volunteering can be a very altruistic act, especially when help is given to low-income or at-risk communities abroad. Here are just a few countries that welcome the efforts of international volunteers.

1. Kenya

There are many volunteering programs based out of Kenya. The most common are dedicated to childcare, but there are also programs for education, medicine and special needs support. In recent years, women's support has also been gaining traction as volunteers help local women establish businesses or deal with issues such as domestic violence or HIV/AIDS.

2. Thailand

The remote villages of Thailand are some of the most sought-after destinations in the country for international volunteer work. The residents need help with things like building schools, learning English and managing various income-earning enterprises. Additional opportunities are also available near the big cities for volunteers who aren't interested in the countryside.

3. India

India is home to many volunteering opportunities for specialized professionals who can devote their time to medicine, dentistry or healthcare education. The slums of the country are still developing in these areas. However, there are also opportunities for young volunteers who are interested in teaching or empowering local women.

4. Spain

Volunteering in Spain can be a great opportunity for people who have always wanted to see iconic destinations like Barcelona. Not only is the country brimming with culture and history, but volunteers can fulfil a deeper purpose through education, animal care, youth support and nature conservation rather than just travelling for fun. There are even "creative technologies" programs dedicated to things like web development and marketing abroad.

5. South Africa

Many volunteer opportunities in South Africa involve the beach. Since the country is located right on the edge of the Indian Ocean, there are numerous volunteer programs for everything from sea life conservation to teaching low-income children how to surf. There are also many volunteer jobs available in the nearby Kruger National Park.

6. Jamaica

As a developing country, Jamaica is in need of volunteers who can assist with things like education, healthcare, business growth and overall community development. There are also opportunities for things like sports education and veterinary medicine with local clinics and childcare centres.

These are just a few volunteer opportunities that can be found abroad. There are many more, and they span the entire globe, but these should be enough for enterprising souls who are just beginning their volunteer journey. Good luck!
